An upcoming webinar from the American Public Power Association (APPA) aims to provide small community utilities with information about how to execute LED streetlight retrofit projects. The webinar, “ABC’s of Implementing an LED Street Light Project,” is scheduled for September 27 at 2:00 pm EST. It is being offered in conjunction with APPA’s Demonstration of Energy-Efficient Developments (DEED) program.
Because all utility customers pay for street lights, an LED street lighting retrofit project provides an opportunity for one of the most visible and beneficial energy efficiency projects a utility can undertake. The entire community can benefit from the reduced energy usage, operations and maintenance expenses. According to APPA, there has been recent, rapid advancement in LED street light technology, and prices are decreasing. However, many utilities lack independent information on standards, best practices and lighting design guidelines for small communities.
As featured webinar presenters, staff from the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) and Waverly Light and Power plan to share this information and more, gleaned from several LED street lighting projects executed in Iowa communities. A basic background on LED street lighting, assistance with analyzing costs and benefits, and suggestions on specifications to bid projects will also be provided.
The webinar will also offer highlights from the upcoming LED Street Lighting handbook, available later this fall. The handbook will include nine case studies of small Iowa communities that installed retrofit LED luminaires in 2011 and 2012, a calculator to determine costs and payback, technical considerations in street light design and luminaire specifications, three simple roadway designs for new installations, and guidance for developing RFP’s for luminaires.
Webinar registration information can be found in the Events portion of APPA’s website. Heartland customers have a complimentary APPA membership and qualify for the discounted $89 registration fee. Non-APPA members must pay $179. DEED program members can attend for free.
